Visiting the Phoenix Park
Visitors to Dublin often wander the tree-lined paths of the Phoenix Park. Measuring over 700 hectares, the Phoenix is the largest urban park in the world. While Richmond Park in London is actually larger, it is considered a suburban park and thus the Phoenix remains unchallenged. The Phoenix is home to one unique feature – a herd of Fallow Deer. The herd has resided within the Phoenix for more than 100 years.Originally the site of a 12th century abbey, but was reclaimed by the throne in 1537. The park contains a few notable features, all of which are popular both with Dubliners and with tourists as well.
The Zoological Gardens are the oldest public zoo in the world, having been created in 1830. The zoological gardens contain more than 600 species of animal, making it one of the most extensive in Europe. The headquarters of the Garda is located within the Phoenix, as well.
Since 1903, the park has housed motorcar races, and the Irish Grand Prix has been held within the park since 1929. The park is full of intimate areas, including the Furry Glen, a secluded area of the park where wild ducks and small mammals make their home. They are often seen approaching visitors hoping for a bit of food or drink. The Phoenix is a necessary stopover for any tourist wanting to take a nap on the cool grass or for residents wanting to play a bit of sports with mates in the afternoon.
